You may have heard of puppy mills in the past but not sure of what they are. The organization CAPS is all about shutting puppy mills down [which they should]. Puppy mills bread dogs that they could care less about, they keep they in terrible living conditions and most of the puppies develop diseases or medical problems. These puppies are kept in cages with four to five puppies in one dirty cage. The puppies are often sold to countless pet stores and will have signs that sate “Our puppies are from breeders, not puppy mills”, but if you want to get technical even puppy mills “breed dogs” so they are all really “breeders”. What really matters is the type and quality for breeding these dogs. To be completely honest, we have so many stray dogs that are unable to help themselves and we just keep breeding more and more of them. I know everyone loves puppies, but that doesn’t mean we forget about the older dogs that have been abandoned, they are still just has hopeless and lovable. We as humans get discouraged by the “cuteness” of an animal, but what if the dog was not the “cutest” of them but was in dire need. A hopeless dog with no chance except for you. Would you turn away from them and go for the newest and cutest puppy that actually has a chance or would you help that hopeless dog who only wants to be loved? These abandoned dogs are not just a toy you can choose when you want it and when you don’t. They have feelings; they feel love, hurt, shame, guilt, and happiness, all of it. I know when I come home from work every day my baby is jumping around all excited, she is happy. When I yell at her for being a bad girl, she gets this sad look in her face like she’s trying to say I’m sorry. Imagine just throwing out that dog like it was nothing. They get attached to you; you are their provider, protector and best friend. That dog will feel nothing but pain and heartache, just like how we feel when someone throws us out to the curb. They can’t even speak up for themselves! All they ever want to do is love you, so give them that chance.
Female dogs are breed back to back, once they give birth to a litter of puppies they breed again and again until they can no longer breed. Then they are killed. These puppies that end up being in a pet store near your neighborhood or in your towns, were abused and their parents are more unlikely to leave a puppy mill alive. Is this what type of human beings we are? We abuse and kill innocent animals, and yet we say we want to protect them. Even your house pet who you consider a family member; millions just like them are getting treated horribly and have even worse living conditions. How can we just sit back and continue to let this happen? These animals have done nothing wrong and there are too many of them out there, but it’s not their fault, it’s ours. We have let these mills go on far too long and have hurt far too many puppies. Now when I say “we” I do not mean that we have personally hurt dogs but we might as well be by not standing up for these dogs. We have a voice they do not. The way they might fight back is by growling or even biting because they have no other way to express themselves. That in return they get beaten or even killed and all their trying to do is save themselves from torture. They need us, all of us. The amount of puppies that the puppy mills produce is obscene and you wonder why we have so many strays. It’s time to get our heads out of our asses and actually do some good, starting by helping to take down these puppy mills.
